The Black Panthers: Vanguard of a Revolution is director Stanley Nelson’s candid, objective look at one of the American civil rights movement’s most divisive groups. And it’s getting the theatrical release it deserves.
Nelson sat down for a chat at this year’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, where Vanguard screened to a sold out audience at Fletcher Hall, the festival’s largest venue. The film is already set for theatrical release in 13 cities and will also enjoy air time on PBS next year. But, in recent months, Nelson has taken to Kickstarter with an eye toward independently funding the film’s widespread theatrical run.
And, as it turns out, Nelson’s foray into the world of crowdfunding was a rousing success. At press time, Vanguard of a Revolution, with pledges totaling roughly $59,000, had eclipsed its $50,000 goal - with almost a full day to spare.
